When I first pictured an extremely frugal grandma, I visualized some sort of American Gothic farm woman out on the range. I figured she would be able to can her own peaches, raise chickens, and probably build a cabin.
However, the grandmother in Living Without Money is a trained psychotherapist in Germany. Her name is Heidemarie Schwermer, and she has given up almost everything she owns, and lived without spending money for 15 years. That’s right, her 0 spending period has lasted a decade and half. That makes our 0 spending challenge look puny!

The majority of presently working, older Americans say they will not be able to quit their regular jobs by the “normal” retirement age of 65. In fact, almost a quarter of them say they will still be working at age 80. Now, a lot of folks are still productive and happy at age 80. But the reality is a lot of them will experience some sort of health problems that will make it impossible for them to keep up their current job at that age.
